Caring for Fabrics
Organic Cotton Hemp Organic Silk Organic Wool Linen Bamboo
ORGANIC COTTON
Refer to Designer care directions prior to following the information below, as blends may require special care.
- For the first wash, add 1/4 cup vinegar to the final rinse to set the color and avoid bleeding or fading
- Wash inside out, especially for prints
- Do not use harsh detergents
- Avoid bleach which will fade colors and weaken fibers
- Separate light and dark colors
- Hang to dry - drying with too much heat can cause shrinkage up to 10%
HEMP
The more you wash it, the softer it becomes. Always read the washing instruction label sewn onto the garment. Hemp will handle extreme water temperatures well and doesn't really require any specialized care.
- Water temperature is not critical, but for best results, wash in cold water
- If your hemp garment has been pre-shrunk, it will be dryer safe
- Quickly dries naturally
ORGANIC SILK
Always, always follow the garment label. Some silk fabrics can be hand washed but others cannot depending on the dye and finish used in the garment. Giving your silk clothing the proper care will freshen the fabric and prolong garment life.
- Protect your silk clothes from perfumes and hair sprays.
- It is advisable to wash a small test area first.
- Hand wash each item separately and always handle silk clothes gently.
- Never use bleach or presoak products.
- Wash in cool water with pre-dissolved mild soap designed for silk (or a gentle shampoo). Avoid soaking and do not wring or twist.
- Rinse in cool water with a capful of vinegar OR lemon juice added.
- Lay garment out on a clean towel and gently roll to remove excess moisture.
- Air dry away from direct sunlight by hanging on a padded hanger until damp dry.
- Using the silk setting (warm) on the iron, press the garment inside out. When using a steam iron, set to the low setting. Visible water spots will appear from a steam iron that spits.
Hanging in the bathroom will allow shower humidity to remove wrinkles.
ORGANIC WOOL
Wool clothes are easy to care for but to keep them looking gorgeous for years, you need to follow a few simple rules. Firstly, follow designer care directions provided with the clothing
Everyday Care
After you have worn your garment, give it a shake to remove any dust and air it out by laying it out on a clean towel. Check for any fuzz balls and remove them with scissors. Pulling can damage garment fibers.
To store, fold your garment rather than hanging it. Wrap in natural paper.
Hand washing
It's a good idea to check the label before laundering your garment.
- Never use bleach or clothes dryer.
- To begin, turn garment inside out.
- Water temp - may use cold, warm or hot but tepid is best. Use the same temperature water for both wash and rinse
- Soap - use a non-alkaline detergent to avoid "fulling". It's a good idea to use shampoo for washing and conditioner for rinsing your wool garments.
- Soak for about 20 minutes - avoid rolling or kneading as fibers are more likely to stretch when they're wet.
- Rinse in a soak again, then rinse in clear water. Some people recommend adding a capful of normal hair conditioner to the rinse water to help eliminate itching. Others recommend 2 teaspoons of vinegar. Give these a try to see what you think.
- Allow garment to drain excess water.
- Gently lay out on a towel, then roll the garment inside the towel and gently press. Never wring.
- Unroll and lay flat on a fresh, dry towel. Reshape the garment and leave laying flat to dry completely (which may take up to 72 hours)
Luxury has been created with this sustainable resource, and the new clothing and linens have a sophisticated look and feel. Spoil your skin - try some organic wool.
ORGANIC LINEN
As always, read the care label first. Repeated washings makes linen softer and eventually reduces wrinkling. Linen fabric can be dry cleaned but it's not necessary (unless it's a suit).
- Just hand wash or machine wash on gentle cycle.
- Wash whites in warmer water and colors in cool water, using a biodegradable detergent.
- Do not use bleach as it will damage linen fibers.
- Hang or lay flat to dry. Avoid tumble drying.
- Iron while the garment is still damp to guard against burning the fabric. It's a good idea to iron the inside first to remove wrinkles, then do the outside to create a sheen. Avoid ironing dark colors on the outside.
- Store hanging is preferable rather than folded.
BAMBOO
- With bamboo cloth, there's no need for expensive dry cleaning!
- Recommended to wash in warm or cold water on the delicate cycle.
- Most manufacturers recommend washing without bleach or fabric softener, but you can use dryer sheets.
- You can line dry light garments, but heavier garments should be laid flat dry to dry.
- Tumble drying 100% bamboo clothing will cause them to lose shape much sooner than if you stick to line drying only.
- Garment washed products are preshrunk and may be tumble dried on low for a short time. If it hasn't been garment washed first, you can expect up to 3% shrinkage.
- Iron garments on LOW heat, if you really insist. Set iron heat to "synthetic" setting, but no higher. Do not use steam because if your iron spits, it can cause noticeable rings on the fabric. These will disappear when laundered again.
